Ongoing Research Studies

We are very proud to be the first Canadian institution to be a member of the Canine Bladder Cancer Consortium.

In collaboration with clinics across North America we aim to improve diagnosis and treatment for dogs and humans with bladder cancer.

We are very proud to be the first Canadian institution who is part of the Canine Bladder Cancer Consortium. We are paired with acaemics and clinics across North America, looking to improve treatment for bladder cancer in dogs and humans.

Radiomic and miRNA prediction algorithm for outcomes associated with Urothelial Carcinoma (Pilot Phase)

Bladder cancer affects many dogs and it is very difficult to adequately assess how the tumour changes over time. This study aims to obtain blood, urine, and imaging of dogs with bladder cancer over their treatment course. The data will be used to create a radiomic algorithm that can adequately assess tumour volume, but also begin to pair with genetics and predict treatment response.

Oral Tumour Photogrammetry

Funded by the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust Fund, this study utilizes the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor built into the commercial iPhone to create a 3D model of the patient's head and oral tumour.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether this technology is feasible for remote clinical trial monitoring of oral tumours in dogs and is compared to manual measurements and CT measurements.

Dogs eligible for this study will received a $250 credit to their CT scan for participating.

Use of Artificial Intelligence for Tumour Segmentation

Algorithms have been created for self-driving cars, dermatology, and other human medical disciplines. To date, no models have been created for tumour segmentation in dogs and cats with cancer. Using images from our patient's tumours as well as CT and ultrasound imaging, we are working towards a first-of-its-kind medical model that can segment tumours based on multiple types of medical images in veterinary medicine.

Tumour Banking

Tumour banking is very important in veterinary oncology. This allows researchers to take small samples after a tumour has been biopsied that can be evaluated for several markers. In addition, small volumes of collected blood or urine at the time of diagnosis or disease relapse can provide critical information on tumour biology.

We are proud to offer tumour banking services to help accelerate discovery and push veterinary cancer research forward as one of the only private practices in Ontario with this capability.
