At the Toronto Animal Cancer Centre, our compassionate and collaborative team is solely focused on oncology. With diverse backgrounds and deep expertise, we work together at every stage to ensure your pet receives the most advanced and personalized care possible.

Dr. Christopher Pinard DVM, DVSc DACVIM (Oncology)

Founder, Head Oncologist

Dr. Pinard is a board-certified veterinary oncologist and founder of the Toronto Animal Cancer Centre. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Sunnybrook Research Institute, leading AI-driven projects in human and veterinary oncology, and is the co-founder and CEO of ANI.ML Health, a company researching and building AI tools to support veterinary teams and improve cancer care.


Dr. Pinard has contributed to numerous clinical trials and peer-reviewed publications (h-index 10), with a research focus on comparative oncology and cross-species insights through artificial intelligence. A frequent podcast guest and advocate for responsible innovation, he has served on advisory boards for DVM360 and the Morris Animal Foundation.


His passion lies in advancing veterinary oncology while delivering compassionate, personalized care to every patient.

Carey Apfelbeck, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Carey is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with over 25 years of experience and a genuine passion for delivering exceptional patient care. She spent many years of her career working in both general practice and non-profit veterinary settings before moving to oncology several years ago. In oncology, Carey feels privileged to support pets and their families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. This field has given her the unique opportunity to build deep bonds with both her patients and the people who love them. At the heart of Carey’s work is a deep commitment to making animals feel safe, comforted, and truly cared for. She takes great pride in being part of the compassionate, collaborative team at TACC, where expert care is delivered with dignity, empathy, and respect.

Tasha Cairns

Registered Veterinary Technician, VTS In Anesthesia

Tasha is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with 15 years of experience in many facets of veterinary medicine, from non-profit to emergency and specialty. She quickly discovered a passion for anesthesia and pain management, and in 2025 obtained designation as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Anesthesia and Analgesia. Tasha's number one prioroty is to keep every animal in her care safe, comfortable, and pain-free. She holds additional certification in Fear-Free techniques and RECOVER CPR. Tasha is proud to provide anesthesia care and support for TACC patients by managing their pain, allowing them and their families to live their lives to the fullest while in treatment.

She is known for her personality, communication, and empathy. She is dedicated to supporting her clients, patients, and team to ensure every visit feels personal and stress free.
